Last time we visited Europe it was in autumn. For the most part we had good weather but towards the end of our visit the days shortened and days got rather cold.  This time we will arrive as the weather (hopefully) improves.  The days will lengthen and get warmer.  I just hope we don't have one of those heat waves that Europe seems to be having with increased frequency and earlier.

Bev had decided she wanted to make cycling the focus of our holiday and it suits my style of travel.  I think I have done enough visiting cities and towns for a day or two like we did on last trip.  Bev had got enthused about going down the Moselle river after talking with a friend of hers so that was the first decision.  She had also wanted to cycle along the Croatian coast however we decided that was too much of what others did and as well the tours did not start until May.  I happened to see something about Slovenia and after a discussion we agreed that a trip through the Julian Alps would be a very new experience for us.

The trip was coming together.  Dates were set.  Bev's brother decided he would like to join us as an event to celebrate his 80th year.  Bev's sister was going to be in the area so we worked out how to accommodate her as well.  A very nice family event for them all.  Tickets were booked, accommodation organised as well as trains and planes.  We are going to spend time in Italy after the rides as group and then we go our separate ways.  We are going to the south of France for nearly two weeks before returning home.

Then of course a couple of months before we were due to depart Trump and Netanyahu decide that it was a good idea  to set the Middle East alight.  So fuel prices are sky high but having booked our tickets before those events we are well insulated for the most part.

We talked about the risks and decided on the balance of probabilities it was worth taking a risk.  The flight route avoids the Middle East and we can get to Frankfurt without going through the US.

All is ready for another exciting adventure in
places we are unfamiliar with.

  1. Sounds wonderful! Cycling is a good way to use up all those kilojoules from the yummy bakeries you’ll encounter. Enjoy ☺️
